Apostle Islands National Lakeshore
Individual campsites are available on Basswood (6), Cat (1), Devils (1), Ironwood (1), Manitou (1), Michigan (1), Oak (5), Otter (1), Outer (1), Rocky (7), Sand (3), South Twin (4), Stockton (21), and York (3) Islands.
Group campsites are available on Basswood (1), Oak (2), Sand (2), and Stockton (3) Islands.
Permits can be obtained in advance, allowing campers to reserve the lakeshore's individual and group campsites. Permits should be obtained prior to departure for the islands. Each permit is good for up to 14 consecutive nights of camping. Camping permits are nontransferable. Campsites will be assigned when a reservation is made.
Individual campsites, which accommodate one to seven people, can be reserved up to 30 days in advance of the start of a trip. A $15 nonrefundable administrative fee will be charged for processing the camping permit. This fee must be paid (by credit card, check, or cash) at the time the reservation is made.
A party of eight or more people is considered a group. All groups must use designated group campsites. The park accepts group camping permit reservations beginning in January for that year. Please contact the park for details on how to reserve group campsites. A nonrefundable administrative fee of $30 must be paid (by credit card, check, or cash) for a group camping permit reservation when the reservation is made.
Reservations can be made according to the guidelines above, daily, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Central Standard Time. To make reservations or for more information please call (715)779-3398, extension 6.
The name appearing on the permit is the individual that will be held legally responsible should anyone in the party fail to comply with the conditions of the permit.
Permits must be picked up in person at the lakeshore's Bayfield Visitor Center. Campers must occupy the campsite by 6pm or it may be reassigned. Any permit unclaimed at 6pm on the first day of its itinerary will be cancelled unless the camper calls that day to inform staff of late arrival or change to itinerary. Reservations can be changed one time before the departure date without additional fees. Anyone calling and canceling a permit will be allowed to reschedule for free within one month of call.
If you need to change your itinerary once your camping trip is underway, you must present your camping permit to park staff and they can assist you.
