Lake Superior Environmental Expedition 1999
by Don Dimond
In 1998, a paddler by the name of Kevin Geshel from
Michigan was unsuccessful in crossing Lake Superior to raise
awareness of the environmental challenges facing Lake Superior such as
the attempt by the Canadian Nova Group to pump 600 million
liters of water out of Superior for export to Asia.
After the plan was stopped by public outcry, the Nova Group has gone to
court so they can start pumping operations. A group of sea
kayakers will cross from Thunder Bay Ontario to Isle Royale and
then attempt a forty-seven mile crossing to the Keweenaw
peninsula. This group will include three members from TCSKA: Chad
Brey, Don Dimond and Rob Tull.
