SKOAC (Superior Kayak and Outdoor Adventure Club) is pleased to offer an introductory weekend instructional sea kayak touring trip to the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. **The trip is full for the year and no more sign-ups are being taken.**
Who Can or Should Participate? All students attending the SKOAC Coastal Kayak Basic Strokes and Rescues instruction should considering attending this follow up trip to the Apostle Islands. Other paddlers are also welcome provided you have previously received this or other similar sea kayak instruction and can perform basic techniques including wet exits, solo and assisted rescues and basic boat maneuvering techniques. Perhaps you’ve had the required training but are uncertain about paddling on the big lake. This trip is a great opportunity to experience Lake Superior under the watchful eye of our SKOAC instructors. Please join us! We will expand on the Basic Strokes and Rescues instruction with additional learning in a “real” environment! We’ll cover navigation, risk assessment, packing a boat… and more. A highly experienced group of ACA Certified Instructors will be leading this trip and providing continuous opportunities for coaching along the way. This is the real deal!
What: SKOAC Introduction to Lake Superior Touring – a weekend excursion to the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore
When: June 23th-25th, 2016
Where: Little Sand Bay and Sand Island (Apostle Islands)
Cost: $20! No foolin’! – Minimal fee to cover group camping sites and incidentals
Itinerary: -Friday Night 6/23th – We will meet Friday evening and camp overnight at the campground in Little Sand Bay near the Visitor Center. We’ll be able to “meet and greet” and enjoy some social time together.
-Saturday – following a morning instructional session we will pack our boats and make the paddle crossing to a group campsite on Sand Island.
-Depending on individual participant preferences there will be opportunities to paddle the sea caves at Swallow Point. More adventurous paddlers may paddle additional shoreline to reach the Sand Island lighthouse, the beach landing in Lighthouse Bay or even beyond. Others may choose to explore the hiking path to the lighthouse.
-Saturday Night 6/24th – we will be camping in a group campsite on Sand Island.
-Sunday 6/25th – more paddling opportunities will be available including at Sand Island and depending on the group perhaps a crossing to York Island before returning to our original launch at Little Sand Bay.
Boat and Gear Requirements:
-Sea kayak or equivalent boat – with 2 bulkheads and perimeter deck lines and cross-deck bungies. 16’ or longer boats are preferred but shorter boats in the 14’ to 16’ range can be used provided they have the attributes noted. Additionally, your boat should be outfitted with either a skeg or rudder.
-Boat Related Gear – Paddle; PFD (life jacket); sprayskirt, bilge pump and paddle float, navigation MAP for the Apostle Islands!
-Paddle clothing – farmer john/jane neoprene wetsuit or equivalent, paddle or rain jacket, appropriate footwear, sun protection including hat and sunscreen and sunglasses
-Camping Gear – all participants will be self-sufficient with required camping gear including tent, sleeping bag and pad, camp clothing and rain gear, cook gear and food and beverages and any other items necessary.
